Fuzhou travel guide

Fuzhou is known for its cultural tradition as a “hometown of scholars.” The city has historic cultural sites to visit, while the surrounding area features forests and ancient villages. With relatively few tourists and reasonable everyday costs, it is well suited to a leisurely trip of around three days.

  • Wenchangli Historical and Cultural District: The hometown of Tang Xianzu, this area preserves the gray-brick, dark-tile architecture of its Ming and Qing dynasty lanes. During the day, visit Yulong Wanshou Palace and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. After dark, enjoy the district’s lights or attend the immersive live show *A Dream of Peony Pavilion*.
  • Nixian Platform: Known as the “No. 1 Tower south of the Yangtze,” it has no admission fee. Visit in the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset, reflections on the Fu River, and the reflections of historic buildings.
  • Tang Xianzu Memorial Hall: Designed in the style of a Jiangnan garden, this free museum introduces *The Peony Pavilion* and the Four Dreams of Linchuan. Its traditional landscapes are also suitable for photography.
  • Wang Anshi Memorial Hall: The complex takes the form of a Song-style garden, with bamboo groves and pavilions among white walls and green tiles. Exhibits cover Wang Anshi’s life and related artifacts. For a full view of the architecture, try the area in front of Xifeng Tower.
  • Fuzhou Museum: A national first-class museum, it is especially worth visiting for the Linchuan Culture exhibition. Look out for the Southern Song painted ceramic figurine of a standing person holding an armillary compass. Allow about 1.5 hours.
  • Dajue Mountain: This densely forested, 5A-rated scenic area offers attractions including a cliff train and cliff coaster, with views of valleys and seas of clouds along the way. In summer, rafting is also an option.
  • Liukeng Ancient Village: Known as the “First Village of All Time,” it preserves more than 500 Ming and Qing dynasty buildings. Commercial development is limited, and the lanes are quiet, making it a good place to observe traditional village life and photograph local culture.
  • Mount Magu: Listed as the 10th blessed land of Taoism, it features Xiandu Temple, Shengong Spring, and waterfalls. The paths have relatively gentle slopes, making the walk less strenuous and suitable for enjoying the scenery or arranging a prayer visit.

A Relaxed 3-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1: Cultural sights in the city
    • Morning: Start with a walk through the Celebrity Sculpture Garden to learn about the area’s cultural traditions. Then ride a shared bicycle to the Wang Anshi Memorial Hall and Tang Xianzu Memorial Hall to see their Song-style architecture and gardens.
    • Afternoon: Visit Fuzhou Museum to explore Linchuan’s thousand-year history, then head to Zhengjue Ancient Temple to see the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas and enjoy the temple’s peaceful atmosphere.
  • Evening: Stroll through Wenchangli Historical and Cultural District, admire the pink church and Wanshou Palace at night, and try Linchuan beef offal. If time allows, attend the live performance *A Dream of Peony Pavilion*.
  • Day 2: Choose between mountains and an ancient village
    • Option A (scenery and attractions): Leave early for Dajue Mountain. Ride the cliff train to view the gorge and streams, then try the cliff coaster while enjoying the mountain scenery.
    • Option B (ancient village and culture): Hire a car or drive to Liukeng Ancient Village. Walk through its Ming and Qing dynasty lanes, visit Zhuangyuan Tower and the Dong Clan Ancestral Hall, try farmhouse dishes, and learn about the village’s thousand-year cultural heritage.
  • Day 3: Mountain sightseeing and city relaxation
    • Morning: Visit the Yulian Shuangfei Waterfall and Xiandu Temple in the Mount Magu Scenic Area, enjoy the forest air, then try local Magu rice noodles at the foot of the mountain.
    • Afternoon: Back in the city, stroll and take photos in Sanweng Garden or cycle along the Fu River Greenway before packing for your return journey.

Local Food in Fuzhou

  • Fuzhou Rice Noodles in Broth: A common local breakfast featuring smooth, springy rice noodles in pork-bone broth, served with spicy beef offal and pickled long beans for a mix of savory, sour, and spicy flavors.
  • Linchuan Beef Offal: Beef tripe, intestines, and tendon are simmered in a large pot with a strongly dry-spiced seasoning. Aromatic and spicy, it makes a good late-night snack.
  • Linchuan Mustard Greens Stems: Mustard green stems are cut into pieces and quickly stir-fried with chilies, minced garlic, and fermented black beans. Crisp and appetizing, they also make a good local souvenir.
  • Lotus Root Thread Candy: An intangible cultural heritage pulled candy, made by wrapping sesame filling in finely stretched maltose. It melts easily in the mouth and has a relatively light sweetness.
  • Old Fuzhou Slow-Simmered Soup: Cooked slowly over charcoal in a traditional stove for more than 8 hours. The signature cuttlefish and pork patty soup has a clear, mild broth, with a balanced mix of lean and fatty meat, making it a good choice when you want something hot.
  • Lichuan Taro Dumplings: From Lichuan County in Fuzhou, these have a soft, sticky wrapper filled with dried bamboo shoots and shiitake mushrooms. The tender texture carries the fillings’ savory aroma.

Accommodation and Transport

  • Where to stay: Consider around Wenchangli or near Fuzhou Station first. Wenchang Garden Hotel and Xunmeng Changli Homestay in Wenchangli make it easy to walk around the district and enjoy the night views. Staying near Fuzhou Station is convenient for high-speed rail connections, and breakfast shops are usually nearby.
  • Getting around: Attractions in the urban area are relatively close together, so you can take taxis or ride shared electric bikes. To reach Dajue Mountain, take a tourist shuttle or intercity bus from Fuzhou Passenger Transport Center. Liukeng Ancient Village is best reached by hired car or self-drive.

Travel Notes

  • Opening schedules: The Wang Anshi Memorial Hall, Tang Xianzu Memorial Hall, and Fuzhou Museum are closed on Mondays except during public holidays, so check when planning your itinerary.
  • Clothing and footwear: Ancient villages and mountain areas often have stone paths, so wear comfortable flat shoes. Temperatures can vary noticeably in Dajue Mountain and Mount Magu; bring a light jacket.
  • Food preferences: Jiangxi cuisine is generally quite spicy. If you are not comfortable with spicy food, ask for “less spicy” or “mildly spicy” when ordering.
  • Performance arrangements: *A Dream of Peony Pavilion* is popular, so book tickets online in advance and check the showtimes. It usually starts at 7:30 p.m. and does not run on Mondays.
