Ji'an combines a thousand years of Luling culture with Jinggangshan's revolutionary history and mountain scenery. Many attractions in the city are free, the pace of life is relaxed, and costs are relatively low, making it a good place to slow down and explore.
- Bailuzhou Academy: Founded during the Southern Song dynasty, this academy stands on a small island in the Gan River. Wen Tianxiang once studied here. White walls, old trees and lake waters create a peaceful setting, and Zhuangyuan Bridge is a good spot for photos. Admission is free, but advance reservations are required.
- Qingyuan Mountain: Dense woodland and cool surroundings make this a pleasant place to escape the summer heat or take a leisurely walk. The routes are generally gentle and easy to walk. Along the way, visit the historic Jingju Temple and Yangming Academy and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of a temple in the woods.
- Meibei Ancient Village: Known as the "finest ancient village in Luling," Meibei preserves 367 buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties and centuries-old ponds. It was also a filming location for *Sparkling Red Star*. The village has seen relatively little commercial development, and its waterside horse-head gable walls and their reflections make good subjects for photographs of traditional village life.
- Jizhou Kiln Site: This ancient kiln site has a history stretching back a thousand years. Learn about ceramic decoration techniques such as leaf patterns on black glaze and paper-cut appliqué designs, or try making pottery on a wheel. The setting is quieter than Jingdezhen.
- Jinggangshan: A national 5A-rated scenic area, Jinggangshan combines revolutionary historic sites with mountain scenery. Watch the sea of clouds at Huangyangjie, then visit the waterfalls in the Longtan Scenic Area for an itinerary that brings together history and nature.
Local Food in Ji'an
- Ji'an Stir-Fried Rice Noodles: A common local breakfast, these noodles are quickly stir-fried over high heat for a distinctive smoky wok aroma. The rice noodles are pleasantly chewy, with fragrant, spicy seasoning—a good introduction to everyday food in Ji'an.
- Yongxin Duck with Duck Blood: Duck meat and duck blood are stir-fried together to create a glossy red dish with a rich, savory and spicy flavor. Usually served with rice, it is best suited to diners comfortable with fairly strong heat.
- Taihe Silkie Chicken Soup: Made by slowly simmering a locally raised chicken, this soup has a clear broth, a rich flavor and tender meat. Locally regarded as a nourishing dish, it is often served alongside spicy food to soften the heat.
- Yonghe Tofu: This well-known local dish has a thousand-year tradition and is still made using stone mills. It has a distinct soybean aroma and a soft, silky texture. Its mild flavor makes it suitable for older people and children, and it is traditionally considered gentle on the stomach.
- Jinggang Smoked Bamboo Shoots with Pork: Bamboo shoots are traditionally smoked to give them a distinctive aroma, then stir-fried over high heat with locally raised pork. The earthy flavor of the shoots blends with the richness of the meat in a savory, spicy dish that goes well with rice.

Accommodation and Transport
- Where to Stay: Consider staying near Rulinli or Nengren Lane in Jizhou District. There are plenty of budget hotels, with reasonably comfortable rooms starting at a little over RMB 140. Nearby streets offer plenty of snacks and late-night food, and shared electric bikes are common, making it easy to get around the city.

Practical Travel Tips
- Reservations and Identification: Make advance reservations for venues such as Bailuzhou Academy and the Wen Tianxiang Memorial Hall, and carry your ID card.
- Spice Levels: Ji'an food tends to be spicy. If you are not used to the heat, ask for "less spicy" or "mild" when ordering.
- Mosquitoes and Weather: Bring insect repellent for Qingyuan Mountain and the ancient villages, where vegetation is dense. Jiangxi's weather can be changeable, so carry an umbrella for both sun and rain.
- Photography Timing: Plan village photography for the afternoon, when softer light brings out the horse-head gable walls and stone-paved lanes, while avoiding the strong midday sun.
