Jingdezhen travel guide

Jingdezhen’s ceramic history and contemporary creativity intertwine here. The pace of travel is relaxed, making it well suited to a weekend or short holiday spent exploring lanes, visiting museums and galleries, and sampling local snacks. The itinerary below covers three days and two nights, combining ceramic culture, mountain villages and local food.

  • Imperial Kiln Museum: Built on the site of the imperial kilns from the Ming and Qing dynasties, the museum is known for its red-brick vaulted spaces. Late afternoon is a good time to observe the interplay of light and architecture, while after dark you can see the illuminated grounds. Admission is free, but advance reservations are required.
  • China Ceramics Museum: A major museum devoted to ceramics, with exhibits that help visitors trace the development of Chinese ceramics over thousands of years. Start on the 7th floor to see the “Silent Buddha,” then work your way down floor by floor.
  • Sanbao Village: Set among mountains and streams, the village is dotted with pottery studios and cafés. Rent a small electric scooter to explore along the roads, taking in ceramics, relaxing and taking photos in the peaceful surroundings.
  • Taoxichuan Creative District: Converted from an old porcelain factory, the district retains its industrial character with red-brick factory buildings and large chimneys. Creative markets are held from Friday to Sunday, while evenings are a good time to see the district lit up.
  • Sculpture Porcelain Factory: This area specializes in original handmade ceramics, jewelry and ornaments. Prices are relatively reasonable, and you can find small creative items for just a few dozen yuan. On weekends, you can also visit the Letian Market.
  • Yaoli Ancient Town: About 45 kilometers from the city center, the town is surrounded by mountains and water, with flagstone lanes and white walls topped by dark tiled roofs. Commercial development is limited, making it a good place to slow down and stroll through an old village.

Three-Day, Two-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Ceramic history and evening views of the districts
    • Morning: Visit the China Ceramics Museum. Go straight to the 7th floor to see the “Silent Buddha,” then walk down floor by floor to learn about the development of ceramics through the exhibits.
  • Noon: Have lunch on Fuzhou Nong Snack Street. This is a good chance to try Fan’s Beef Bone Rice Noodles, youtiao stuffed with mochi, and jiaozi ba in one meal.
  • Afternoon: First walk through the Taoyangli Historic District to see everyday life in the old Ming and Qing lanes, then visit the Imperial Kiln Museum and take Chinese-style photos in its red-brick vaulted spaces.
  • Evening: Head to the Taoxichuan Creative District to browse the original-design market, enjoy the red-brick factory buildings after they light up, and learn about the work of young ceramic artists.
  • Day 2: A mountain-village walk and ceramic shopping
    • Morning: Go to Sanbao Village early, when there are fewer visitors and shorter lines. Rent a small electric scooter and slowly explore the mountain village, stopping at cafés and the ceramic walls along the way.
  • Afternoon: Visit the Sculpture Porcelain Factory to browse reasonably priced original ceramics. There are many designs for small cups, bracelets and ornaments. You can also join a wheel-throwing activity and make your own ceramic piece.
  • Evening: Browse the ceramic stalls at the Taoyang Xincun Night Market, which is open every evening. Locals also come here for affordable ceramics, including handmade vases, bracelets and ornaments, with some less common designs to discover.
  • Day 3: An ancient town or Porcelain Palace
    • Option A (if you have plenty of time): Hire a private car or join a shared ride to Yaoli Ancient Town. Stroll along the flagstone lanes, watch the stream flow through the village, and take in the Jiangnan scenery reminiscent of the mood of Jay Chou’s “Blue and White Porcelain.”
  • Option B (if you are short on time): Visit Porcelain Palace. An elderly woman in her eighties built this structure from tens of thousands of porcelain pieces, and the dome decorated with colorful shards is the main attraction. For photos, wear solid colors and use a wide-angle lens to show the scale of the space.
  • Afternoon: Organize your purchases, finish sightseeing and prepare for the journey home.

Local Specialties

  • Jingdezhen Cold Rice Noodles: These rice noodles are about as thick as chopsticks, with a springy, chewy texture. They are tossed with seasoned chili oil, chopped dried orange peel and preserved radish. The flavor is fresh and spicy, and they are a common local breakfast.
  • Fan’s Beef Bone Rice Noodles: The beef bones are simmered until tender, with the meat easy to pull away from the bone. The broth is rich, savory and spicy, while the rice noodles carry a braised aroma. Portions are generous and the overall spice level is high, so ask for mild spice when ordering if you do not tolerate heat well.
  • Youtiao Stuffed with Mochi: Soft, stretchy mochi is tucked into a freshly fried youtiao and topped with sesame seeds and sugar. Each bite combines crispness with a chewy texture, with a moderately sweet flavor.
  • Jiaozi Ba: The thin, soft and glutinous wrappers are made from rice flour. Fillings include spicy shredded radish and a non-spicy combination of chives and dried tofu. Eat them hot after steaming, when the filling is especially juicy.
  • Alkaline Rice Cake: This local staple is made by slicing rice cake and stir-frying it over high heat with cured meat or eggs. The finished dish has a pronounced garlic aroma and wok hei, with a pleasantly chewy texture that does not stick to the teeth.
  • Qizhong Little Meat: Pork tenderloin is cut into thumb-sized pieces, pan-fried and brushed with a sweet-and-spicy sauce. The outside is charred and fragrant while the inside stays tender. Its distinct sweet-and-spicy flavor makes it a popular local late-night snack among students.

Where to Stay

  • Around Taoxichuan and Taoyang Xincun: Best for visitors who want easy access to night markets and original ceramics. Cafés and pottery studios are concentrated nearby, evening activities are plentiful, and it is easy to experience Jingdezhen’s ceramic creative scene.
  • Zhushan District (People’s Square/Zhejiang Road): Suitable for travelers on a budget who value convenient transport. It is close to major attractions such as the Imperial Kiln Museum and Sculpture Porcelain Factory, with plenty of dining options and a wide choice of chain hotels and budget guesthouses.
  • Sanbao Village: Valley guesthouses suit travelers who prefer quiet surroundings, photography and a slower pace, with an artistic atmosphere. Local transport is relatively limited, so consider driving or hiring a private car.

Transport and Travel Tips

  • Getting around: High-speed trains go directly to Jingdezhen North Railway Station. Within the city, consider renting a small electric scooter, which costs about 30 yuan per day and is convenient for navigating old streets and lanes. It is also more flexible than taking taxis. For farther destinations such as Yaoli Ancient Town and Porcelain Palace, choose a shared ride or private car.
  • Reservations: Admission to the China Ceramics Museum and Imperial Kiln Museum is free, but real-name reservations must be made in advance through the mini-program. Both museums are closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly.
  • Buying ceramics: Prices near scenic-area entrances are often high. For better prices, visit Taoyang Xincun Night Market or the Sculpture Porcelain Factory; for original handmade designs, browse the Taoxichuan market. Compare prices at different stalls before buying and negotiate where appropriate.
  • Spice levels: Jiangxi cuisine is generally fresh and spicy. If you do not eat spicy food or have a low tolerance, tell the restaurant in advance that you want “no spice” or “mild spice.” You can also order iced mung bean soup to drink alongside your meal.
  • Best times for photos: Plan to photograph the Imperial Kiln Museum and Taoxichuan between 3 and 5 p.m., when the light is softer. The lights come on after 7 p.m., making it a good time for night photography.
